You won’t need to bring any cash with you. Toll roads in New York vary in price, but the state has moved to a cashless system.
The toll rates are based on a complicated schematic that takes into account the size of your vehicle, the type of payment you use, and the specific toll road(s) you take.
You’ll either be charged to your E-ZPass account (if you have one) or the registered owner of the vehicle will receive a bill after about 30 days. They’ll send the bill based on an image snapped of your vehicle’s license plate. For the bill-by-mail system, you could be charged anywhere from $0 to $8.21 if you drive a Class 2L vehicle.
To simplify your planning, the New York Thruway Authority has a couple of nice tools to use:
Vehicle class guide: You can find out which class your vehicle falls into on www.thruway.ny.gov
. Toll and distance calculator: Once you know your vehicle class and your route, use the toll and distance calculator on the same site to find out what you’ll be charged.
Before you head out, you may want to double-check your New York car insurance
coverage. You can easily compare it to other policies, which might have better prices, using the Jerry
app. Just download the app, input some basic information, and look over the set of competitive car insurance
quotes that Jerry retrieves for you. If you see one you like, Jerry makes switching over easy. And the average Jerry user saves more than $800 a year!
