I’ve been thinking about getting my first electric car, but I’m concerned that my standard 120volt home outlets won’t be powerful enough to charge my car. How many volts are electric car charging stations?

The good news is that yes, a standard 120 volt home outlet can be used to charge an
electric car
, but it does take quite a bit of time compared to what you might find at a charging station.
Currently, there are three types of electric car chargers:
  • Level 1 charging is charging using a standard 120V outlet. They are convenient for home use, but typically take about 12-15 hours to charge your car to optimal levels.
  • Level 2 charging utilizes a 240V outlet, and can charge your car to optimal levels in just a few hours. This is ideal for home use, as it can charge your car easily overnight in just a few hours.
  • Level 3 charging, or DC Fast Charge and Supercharging is what you will find at most public charging stations, and can be anywhere from 400 to 900 volts.
