This is because the Hilux is not officially sold in the United States due to something called the Chicken Tax. This tax imposed by the American government places a 25% tariff on light-built trucks from outside of the United States, among other goods. This tax makes it impossible for the Toyota Hilux to compete with other similar pickup models in the U.S.—therefore this truck is not available in the United States.
In other countries, though, this truck is very popular. The Toyota Hilux was one of Australia’s top cars of the year, and it’s the top-selling vehicle in Argentina! Clearly, the Americans are missing out by not having the Hilux in their lives.
