I’m a car collector considering purchasing a classic GTO. Do you know how many Pontiac GTOs were made?

From 1963 to 1974, 515,797
Pontiac GTOs
were manufactured. Most GTOs were produced before 1970, and production tapered off significantly after 1971.
Back in its heyday, the GTO was a hugely popular American muscle car. This classic car was inspired by the Ferrari GTO’s prowess on the racetrack, but added that distinct American-muscle feel and was a more affordable, street-ready option for gearheads of the day.
Pontiac stopped making the GTO in 1974 for a few key reasons. First, the oil crisis that slammed Americans in 1973 meant that most consumers stopped valuing power and style in their cars and instead switched to cars with better fuel economy. Second, the GTO had been restyled seven times between 1963 and 1974, and the car was starting to lose its signature look and feel.
If you’re considering purchasing a Pontiac GTO, consider purchasing
classic car insurance
.
This type of coverage is significantly less expensive than a standard insurance policy because your provider assumes your car is kept as a collector’s item rather than a regular-use vehicle. The qualifying factors for this coverage vary but typically include the following:
  • Older than 25 years
  • Restoration appraisal
  • Minimal use
  • Secure storage
  • Good driving record
