How many miles can a car go on empty?

I'm in a tight spot financially right now, so I can't fill up my gas tank very often. The needle on my car is in empty-territory, but I don’t think I’m ready to fill up. What’s the standard amount of miles for a car to go on an empty gas tank?

Your car will usually tell you that your tank is empty before you’ve run out of fuel, but the actual mileage you’ll get once it says empty varies from car to car.
Some models can get as much as 30 to 50 more miles on an empty tank. In general, smaller cars get more miles out of an empty tank than larger ones. For example, Toyota Corollas can get 47 miles out of an empty gas tank.
Remember, driving on empty can be
bad for your car
, so try to keep at least a little gas in your tank.
