How many Jaguar E-Types were made?

I’ve always been a huge fan of the Jaguar brand. However, I recently stumbled upon a Jaguar E-Type at an auto show, and I was immediately intrigued. The owner wasn’t there to answer questions, so I thought I’d just research it myself. How many E-Types did Jaguar make?

Jaguar
manufactured 72,515 E-Types from 1961 to 1974, including:
  • 38,419 of the first generation (1961 to 1968)
  • 18,809 of the second generation (1968 to 1971)
  • 15,287 of the third generation (1971 to 1974)
Sold in both North American and Europe, the E-Type was decidedly British, blending the two-seater sports car style popular in the U.K. at the time along with a zesty V6 engine that pushed between 246 and 265 horsepower.
However, the popularity of the E-Type diminished over time, but not for a lack of style or power. Updated safety requirements in both the U.S. and the U.K. led to a less attractive design and more weight, which slowed the car considerably. As a result, the third generation saw sluggish sales and was eventually discontinued after the 1974 edition.
