How many hours of driving is needed before getting a license in Virginia?
I just got my learner’s permit, and I want to book all my driving practices as soon as possible. How many hours of practice will I need before I can do the road test?

Congratulations on getting your permit! You will need a minimum of 45 hours of behind-the-wheel practice driving, 15 of which must be at night. While you are practicing, you must be supervised by a licensed parent, legal guardian, or driver over 18.
Once you have held your license for nine months or more and fulfilled the practice hours, you will be eligible to take the road test to be fully licensed—provided that you are at least 16 years and 3 months old.
Even after you pass your exam, there are age-based restrictions on teen drivers under 18. This includes:
- No driving between 12 am to 4 am, unless there is an emergency
- During the first year, you can only carry one passenger under the age of 18
- After one year, you must not carry more than three passengers under the age of 18
- You cannot use any wireless communication device while driving
- Passenger restrictions do not apply to immediate family members
