Approximately 23,000 special edition Ford Mustang
Bullitts have been produced by Ford over three generations—2001, 2008-2009, and 2019, with a limited amount of supply in 2020 after 2019 demand exceeded expectations. The special edition Ford Mustang Bullitt was an homage to the famous, highland green 1968 Ford Mustang GT 390 Fastback from the 1968 film Bullitt. It was this ‘68 Mustang driven by McQueen’s character Detective Frank Bullitt that became part of one of the most influential car chase scenes in cinema history.
Starting in 2001, Ford released the first of three special edition Mustangs inspired by the film, offered in the same highland green exterior paint job (other colors were also available) that Det. Bullitt drove on San Francisco’s streets. About 12,000 Ford Mustang Bullitts were produced in 2001, with another 8,000 following over the course of two model years, 2008 through 2009, and then about 3,500 built for the 2019 version, which was extended into 2020.
The 2020 Ford Mustang Bullitt was a great homage to the one that Detective Bullitt drove—it boasted a 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine with 480 horsepower paired with a six-speed manual transmission, not to mention a stiffer suspension and enhanced steering. The 2020 Mustang Bullitt had a starting price of $46,705, but according to Edmunds, you can find one used between $22,000 to $25,000, depending on mileage, condition, and how many police chases it’s been involved in.
