How many drunk driving deaths were there in 2011?
I’ve got two teenage boys, and the older one is about to get his license. I know he’s a role model to my younger son, so I want him to be extra safe on the roads—especially when it comes to drinking and driving! I’d love a little data from the last decade to help get my point across. Do you know how many deaths there were in 2011 because of drinking and driving?

It’s great that you’re looking into the numbers, especially if it’ll be persuasive for your older son. In 2011, there were 9,878 deaths because of drunk driving, which is one fatality every 53 minutes!
Here are some more stats, focused on teen drivers specifically:
- Every day, eight teens die in DUI crashes
- Compared to sober drivers, young drivers (between 16 and 20) are 17 times more likely to die in a crash when their BAC is over the legal limit
- One in ten high schoolers will drink and drive
