How many demerit points will I get for drinking and driving?

We live out in the middle of nowhere, and one of our favorite things to do on the weekend is to just grab a cooler full of beer and hit the back roads. We don’t get drunk or anything, but cruising is just so much more fun with a cold one. I know there are laws against having an open container in your car, but can it actually result in points on your license?

We get it, few things are better than hitting the back roads on a beautiful afternoon—but do it sans suds! It’s illegal in all states for a person to drive a vehicle with an open container of alcohol, and in many states, it’s illegal to have an open container in the car whether the driver is drinking or not.
It doesn’t matter if you think you’re drunk or not either—not only can an open container violation result in up to three points being added to your license in some states, but also, if you’re actively drinking, your body hasn’t had the chance to metabolize the alcohol. That means you’re affected by it, whether you think so or not, so you could be looking at DUI charges as well.
Save yourselves the headaches and legal hassles, and pack a cooler of soda instead. As long as you’re saving yourself from hassles, why not let
