The 2023 Toyota Rav4
engine has four cylinders, and all trims come with the same engine. So whether you’re driving a Rav4 XLE
or a top-trim TRD Off-Road
, you’ll have a 2.5-liter inline-four cylinder engine with 203 horsepower under the hood. Now, the next time your Off-Roading Club meets, and in case your friend—and by friend we mean the bear—doesn’t show, you might have to your handle any probing questions thrown at you without the benefit of a Bear Diversion. Since they started with cylinders, we’ll start there.
A cylinder is a metallic chamber or closed space where fuel is combusted and power is produced, resulting in a piston moving up-and-down—this reciprocating motion generates power and moves your vehicle.
In a vehicle with four cylinders, those cylinders are usually set up in an “inline” row, hence the term “inline four-cylinder engine”. There are inline six-cylinder engines as well. However, most six cylinder engines are V6 engines, with those cylinders lined up in two rows forming a “V”.
As a general rule of thumb, the more cylinders your engine has, the more powerful the vehicle. That said, the more cylinders your vehicle has, the more likely it is to consume more fuel. So when your off-roading pals are stuck because their V6 or V8-powered rigs have run out of gas, you’ll be the hero who rescues them. Unless the bear gets to them first.
