How many cylinders does a Smart Car have?

I saw a Smart Car for the first time in a while yesterday, which got me thinking about what sort of engine it must have—seeing as it’s so small, it must have a pretty small engine, right? How many cylinders does a Smart Car have?

Since its inception and release in 1998, the
Smart Car
has always sported some variation of a three-cylinder engine, most of which only have a 1 liter displacement. This may not seem very impressive, but each cylinder has four valves—most vehicles only use a two-valves-per-cylinder setup.
Of course, the Smart Car isn’t exactly designed to be impressive—it’s designed to be efficient. You won’t get much more than 40 - 80 horsepower out of a Smart Car, but even the earliest models averaged 46 mpg combined city/highway, making it one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the market.
Nowadays, most Smart vehicles are
all-electric or hybrid vehicles
—the 2022 model averages a whopping 108 mpg combined city/highway.
