How many cylinders are in a Subaru Outback?

My old pickup truck finally bit the dust, and I’m looking for something smaller and more family-friendly to replace it. I’m worried about having enough power, though. How many cylinders are in a Subaru Outback?

No need to worry—we’ve got the answer for you right here. The number of cylinders in a Subaru Outback’s engine depends on the model. All current
Subaru Outbacks
are equipped with a four-cylinder engine, but some previous models came with the option for a six-cylinder. The 2019 Subaru Outback was the last model featuring the 3.6-liter six-cylinder Boxer engine, which produced 256 horsepower with 247 lb-ft of torque.
Most drivers don’t miss the six-cylinder option, however, because Subaru’s new generation of Outbacks features an optional turbocharged direct injection four-cylinder engine cranking out 260 hp. The standard 182-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine isn’t too shabby either.
For the 2023 Outback model, both of these engine options are paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission—and standard all-wheel drive, of course. Neither powertrain delivers the most powerful punch, but the Outback’s handling is more than adequate, particularly if you’re taking it off the beaten path. With 8.5 to 9.7 inches of
ground clearance
and up to a 3,500-lb towing capacity, the Subaru Outback can handle nearly anything you throw at it.
