I’ve been diagnosed with anger management issues. While I can usually keep a lid on the situation, sometimes it boils over when I’m behind the wheel and I tend to drive more aggressively. I’m well aware that this can lead to a ticket and possible license suspension, so I’m trying to control myself. How long will my license be suspended for aggressive driving?

It’s good to know that you’re trying to get a handle on your anger management issues, but traffic can certainly stir up emotions. To be clear, aggressive driving isn’t an actual charge.
But you can certainly earn other charges for aggressive behavior behind the wheel (i.e., reckless driving, careless driving, or negligent driving). If convicted, your license can be suspended for aggressive driving for up to two years in some states.
- Whether it’s your first offense
- Where you live
- Whether you’re driving your personal car or a commercial vehicle
- Whether you’re charged with reckless driving, careless driving, or negligent driving, which varies by jurisdiction
Commercial drivers face stricter penalties, which may lead to a commercial license suspension of two to five years.
If you’re driving your own car, a first-time offense may result in no suspension or up to a year suspension. The decision is up to the discretion of the traffic court judge.
Since you have diagnosed anger management issues, you may want to present this to the court. Instead of suspending your license, the judge could take mercy on you by ordering anger management or road rage classes. This will enable you to keep your license while also getting the help you need.
