How long does it take to change your oil?

I have an oil change scheduled for tomorrow morning, but I need to be at work soon after, and I want to let my boss know ahead of time if I’m going to be late—how long does it take to change your oil?

While the time it takes to change your oil can vary, it generally takes between 30 and 45 minutes for a mechanic to:

Drain your old oil

Replace the oil filter

Fill your engine with new oil

Generally speaking, most of an oil change consists of waiting for all the old oil to drain, which usually takes between 15 and 20 minutes.

Once the oil drains, the mechanic will then replace the oil filter—an additional 10 to 15 minutes, depending on how accessible the filter is—and pour new oil into the engine, which should only take a couple of minutes.

Add in a few minutes for wait time and the total time it takes to change your oil is roughly 30 to 45 minutes.
