How long do you have to renew your car insurance?

My policy expired yesterday. I forgot to renew it. How long do I have to do so?

If you’ve been with your current
car insurance company
for a full policy term, your policy may have renewed automatically. Most companies send out a renewal notice a month or so before your policy’s expiration date.
If you’re on auto-pay and didn’t make any changes or cancelled your current policy, your renewal may have occurred automatically. You should check your online account and email for any correspondence from your insurance company.
If you received a renewal notice but never responded or you aren’t on autopay, get in touch with your insurance company and they can reinstate your policy. However, you typically only have up until the end date of your policy term to renew your insurance.
Should your insurer be unable to reinstate your policy, you need to shop around with other companies. Since you’re legally required to have car insurance in most states, you could get into serious trouble if you’re caught
driving with no insurance
. You could also face higher insurance rates with lapses of insurance. Finding new car insurance as quickly as possible will keep you and your vehicle protected.
