How long do car batteries last in Texas?

I just found a great new job, and I’m moving from Massachusetts to Texas in a few weeks. A friend offered some advice on driving cross-country, and she said car batteries die quicker in Texas than here. Is that true? How long do car batteries last in Texas?

You’ve surely heard the phrase “everything is bigger in Texas,” but car battery life didn’t make the cut. Car batteries don’t usually last as long in warmer climates. A car battery that would last five years in Massachusetts might last three or four years in Northern Texas, or just two or more years in southern Texas.
You’d think colder air would be more harmful to batteries than warmer air, but a car battery’s chemistry doesn’t do as well in hotter climates. That’s even true for fancy modern AGM batteries. Heat and car batteries simply don’t get along.
Now for the rub: car batteries don’t do great in extreme cold, either. Temperature extremes on both ends of the thermometer expose car batteries to stress and can shorten lifespans. You’ll see many more battery replacements in summer and winter than in spring or fall. But states like Texas that see higher temperatures year-round aren’t ideal for battery life.
Regardless of where you live, be sure to have your car battery checked yearly. Occasionally ask your mechanic to do this when you get an oil change, because the last thing you want to experience is a dead battery that strands you someplace.
We hope this information helps and you love your new job too!
