I never let my tank get low enough that the gas light goes on! My sister was making fun of me and saying that she goes days with her light on. What?! How long can you even do that for?

It all depends on your car and mpg. Many cars can feasibly go 20 to 40 miles after the gas light comes on. But there are so many factors at play: where the sensor in your gas tank is, how good your mpg is, whether you’re driving in the city or on the highway, whether you’re driving on an incline…the list goes on!
The better question is: should you drive when your gas light is on? The answer is no, if you can avoid it.
Driving with the gas light on not only puts you at risk for running out of gas and being stranded in the middle of the road—it also means that your engine is using bottom-of-the-barrel gas. The gas at the bottom of your tank tends to have a lot of impurities that can damage your engine or fuel pump.
