How is the pons active while driving a car?

I’m taking a biology class right now, and we’re learning about different parts of the brain. Out of curiosity, what is the pons responsible for when I’m driving a car?

That’s a great question! The pons sends visual information to the occipital lobe when you see different things in your environment, such as while you are driving a car.
For example, when you see a stop sign while you are driving, this information will first be sent to the pons. The pons will then relay the information to the occipital lobe to be interpreted.
The occipital lobe and frontal lobe work together to process the visual information and produce an appropriate response. In this case, you would:
  • Stop at the stop sign
  • Scan the intersection
  • Drive through with caution
Any damage to the pons and occipital lobe, such as cortical lesions, will inhibit a person’s driving ability, as it can result in hallucinations or blindness.
Vehicle crashes can lead to occipital lobe damage, which is why having the right
