I got a new Nissan Leaf just last year and I’m shocked to hear that the 40-kWh battery is known for degrading quickly in the first year. Is this true? How fast does a 40-kWh battery degrade?

Rest assured, battery degradation is completely normal! Nissan considers 80% battery capacity after five years to be acceptable, but if the 40-kWh battery for your Leaf drops below 70% capacity, check with Nissan to see if it’s still under warranty.
Most electric vehicle batteries (including those for your
Nissan LEAF
) typically degrade by one to three percent over the first year and up to a total of 20% over the first five years of ownership. Nissan offers an eight-year or 100,000-mile warranty for the 40-kWh battery. Keep in mind that your driving style, charging habits, and environmental conditions are the biggest factors in how quickly your battery degrades.
