I am currently installing the carbon monoxide detectors in my home (I haven't moved in yet, don’t worry!) and was a little confused about where to put them. How far should a carbon monoxide detector be from the furnace?

Good question. A working carbon monoxide detector is a crucial part of every home, and can possibly save your life. It’s recommended you install detectors five to twenty feet from sources of carbon monoxide, like a furnace.
Fuel-burning appliances generate carbon monoxide (CO). CO is odorless, tasteless, and invisible. It can cause serious illness or death. Having a CO detector on every floor is the best way to keep you safe.
Having a detector five to twenty feet from a source of CO will be far enough not to trip unnecessarily, but close enough that it will quickly alert you to any dangerous levels of CO.
