How do you use an electric breast pump in the car?
I’m a new mom and my husband and I want to take a road trip to see my nephew’s high school graduation. But I’m concerned about being able to breastfeed while I’m on the road. Am I able to do so in the car and while it’s my turn to drive? How would you use an electric breast pump in the car?

You’ll be happy to know that while you can’t actually breastfeed while you’re driving, **you can absolutely use an electric breast pump in the car. **Before you embark on your trip, make sure you have the appropriate items to do so, including an electrical pump (a manual one can be unsafe), a hands-free pumping bra, a nursing cover, a set of pump parts, two bottles with caps, and a gallon-sized plastic zip-top bag.
Here’s how to use an electric breast pump in the car:
- Place the pump on the seat next to you and plug it in. It’s also a good idea to make sure your cup holders are empty so the pump tubing doesn’t knock any drinks over. You can also use the holder to place pumped-in bottles.
- Put on your nursing cover and hands-free pumping bra and hook up to the pump.
- Next, put your seatbelt on. Make sure the lap belt is under the bottles and place the front belt that goes across your chest between the two bottles.
- Before you start to drive, check the speed of the pump and make sure you’ll be comfortable for a long stretch.
- Once you start to drive, it’s_ very _important to ignore the pump. Checking the bottles or changing the speed can distract you from the road.
- When you’re ready to remove the pump, bring your car to a complete stop and put it in park. Then, turn off the pump and** unhook **yourself.
- You can place your bottles in the cup holders and used pump parts in your plastic bag.
