How do you take out a car radio without keys?
I want to improve my car’s sound system, but I don’t have the keys I apparently need to do it. Is there any way to take out a car radio without the keys?

Contrary to what you might have heard, you don’t need keys to take out your radio! That said, it may be easier to take out your radio with a din tool—a specialized tool for removing car radios. Follow these steps to take out your car radio without keys:
- Start by disconnecting the battery.
- On older vehicles, take off the plastic trim surrounding the radio by removing the screws holding it in place.
- For newer vehicles, slowly and carefully pry up the edges of the dashboard panel with a plastic card you don’t need or a pry bar. Once all the edges are up, it should pop out of place!
- Now that the stereo is exposed, you should see fasteners on each side of the radio. Check your owner’s manual to locate any hidden clips and learn how to safely remove them.
- After you take off the clips, slip your din tool, hangers, or wires in the cracks on either side of the radio.
- Use them to simultaneously undo the clips on each side—you should hear a click.
- Now your radio should slide out!
