How do you stay in your lane when driving?

I’m not a confident driver, but one of my major concerns is staying in my lane. I always seem to veer a bit and it makes me nervous. How can I stay in the center of my lane when driving?

Staying in your lane is a critical component of
safe driving
, so mastering the skill is important.
To stay in your lane when driving, follow these steps:
  • Look about 15 to 20 seconds ahead at the center of your lane.
  • Don’t stare at this spot. Keep your eyes moving, but focus back toward the center frequently.
  • Don’t use other vehicles to help you, as this may cause you to drift if the other driver drifts.
  • Avoid tailgating.
  • Loosen your grip on the steering wheel.
  • Limit distractions in your car so you’re focused on the road.
Most importantly, keep practicing! Skills and confidence will come in time.
While car insurance won’t help you stay in your lane, it will certainly help in the event of a mishap on the road. Insurance can be expensive for new drivers, but don’t overpay needlessly. Instead, go to
