How do you sign over a car title in Illinois?
What steps do I need to take to sign over a car title in Illinois? I’m selling a car to my buddy and we need to figure out how the whole title transfer works.

For the seller:
- Fill out the title, including the VIN and odometer reading.
- Complete the Assignment of Title section on the title.
- Sign the title.
- Give the completed title to the buyer.
For the buyer:
- Fill out the Application for Vehicle Transactions form.
- Get a Private Party Vehicle Tax Transaction form (PVTT) from your local Secretary of State office.
- Complete the PVTT form.
- Turn all documents into the DMV and pay the $95 title transfer fee.
And, just like that, your title is transferred. As the seller, you won’t need to do much—but there’s no harm in helping your friend through the process.
