How do you sell your car in Florida?

Selling a car can be a profitable situation, but there are steps you’ll want to follow.
First, if you have a lien on the car, you’ll need to pay it off to receive a clean title with no lien. If you cannot pay off the lien, you can sell the car through a dealership.
Since you got your car from outside of Florida you may need to complete a Vehicle Identification Number and Odometer Verification form. You will also need a separate entity to confirm your form to make sure you are reporting accurate information. Check with the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles for additional requirements.
If you have gotten rid of the tags on your car, you’ll need temporary tags so prospective buyers can test drive the vehicle.
When you find a buyer, you will have to complete a transfer of title by seller documenting the buyer’s name, address, the current odometer reading, and other identifying information. It’s smart to do this in person at a motor vehicle service center so you know all steps are done correctly.
Finally, it’s very important to file a Notice of Sale. If you don’t do this, you could still be on the hook for traffic infractions perpetrated in the car.
