We talked about scanning while you drive in my driving class the other day but I don’t really understand how to do it. Do you just look at the road or do you have to do something special?

It’s great that you’re taking some time to learn more about this! In order to properly scan the road in front of you while you’re driving, you should try to look 10 to 15 seconds ahead of your vehicle at all times. This is equal to about a quarter-mile of highway driving or a block to a block and a half of city driving.
Look directly in front of you first, then move your eyes slightly to the right, then slightly to the left before returning your gaze straight ahead. You’ll want to look specifically for pedestrians,
, or stopped vehicles when you do this. Repeat this motion with your eyes every 15 to 20 seconds so that you’re constantly aware of all of your surroundings.
