I feel ridiculous—I chose a cool sports car for my vacation car rental, but now I’m sitting in the car lot trying to figure out how to back up. How do you reverse on a manual car?

No worries! Here’s how to reverse a manual car. First, look at the gear shift knob and find the letter R. The knob will also have a little drawing indicating how to move the knob in order to engage each gear. Commonly, the R may be up to the left or down the right.
When you press down on the clutch and move the gear knob into the R position, you will likely encounter a safety system that prevents you from doing so! This is to keep drivers from inadvertently going into reverse while driving.
Look for a security button on the knob or a security ring around the knob, which you will have to pull up on before being able to move the stick shift into reverse.
Enjoy a relaxing vacation!
