How do you remove violations from a driving record in Georgia?
I don’t have the best reputation when it comes to driving—I’ve gotten a couple of speeding tickets and have been pulled over for texting. I want to turn over a new leaf, but I worry my record will hold me back. How can I remove driving violations from my record in Georgia?

is impossible. The promising news, however, is that traffic offenses won’t be as impactful over time, so long as you curb any new citations. Let us explain.When you’re convicted of a driving violation in Georgia—whether it’s for speeding, distracted driving, reckless driving, or another offense—it will stay on your record permanently, no matter how much time has passed.
That said, you will also receive points at the time of the offense, which stay on your record for two years. But if you’re impatient (understandably so), you can request for up to seven points to be removed from your record once every five years. Here’s the process:
- Complete a certified driver improvement course
- Receive your certificate of completion
- Present the certificate of completion to the DDS either by mail or in person
The benefits of taking a defensive driving course
are evident when it comes to points removal, but there’s unfortunately no way to remove violations from your record outright. Fortunately, it becomes very expensive for insurance companies to look far back into your driving history.
