How do you remove a co-owner from a car’s title?

I bought my first car back in high school and my mom is listed as a co-owner of the vehicle. I have since moved out and have a well-paying job and was wondering how I can remove a co-owner from my car’s title?

To remove a co-owner from a car’s title, you will have to follow the same process as if you were selling or gifting the car.
First, your mom need to complete the form on the back of the car’s title that transfers ownership. Depending on the wording used and your state, both owners may have to be listed as the seller but the buyer will be the name you’d like to remain on the title (your name).
Next, you will have to visit the DMV or contact them by phone or using their website to see if the title transfer can be done by mail.
Don’t forget, if the vehicle has a
lien
you will have to pay off the remaining balance or get the lienholder to agree to the transfer. Additionally, if the vehicle is being gifted, be sure to put the sale price as $0 and complete any additional paperwork that may be needed.
Once the process is complete and you are the only owner of the car, make sure to inform your insurance company of the change. Now may also be a good time to shop around for car insurance to ensure you are getting the best deal. Download
