I recently moved to Nebraska, and I’ve noticed we get a lot of hail here. I'm worried about my car; I’m not sure the exterior was made to withstand this type of damage! How can I protect my car from hail?
can really do a number on your car, and in fact, Nebraska, Colorado, and Wyoming have the most hailstorms in the United States. However, I’m happy to say that there are a lot of good ways to protect your car from hail. Here are some tips and tricks to keep your car safe:
Consider building or renting a carport. The best way to protect your car from hail is to seek cover. If you have the space, a carport or any sort of roof over where you park your car will keep your vehicle protected from the worst damage. Hail typically happens during strong winds so, be aware that even if you have a roof overhead your car won’t be totally out of danger.
Buy a car cover. If you don’t have the space or the budget for a carport, garage, or roof, a car cover would be the next best thing. Basic covers are usually quite thick and can offer decent protection against hail, and they can be thrown over your vehicle fairly quickly. For particularly bad hailstorms, there are even inflatable car covers meant to offer better protection against large hail - these often connect to an app to be inflated remotely.
Use blankets or quilts. In a pinch, thick blankets or quilts will offer better protection than nothing. Be sure to focus on covering the most vulnerable areas of your vehicle: the windshield, windows, and sunroof.
If your car does sustain damage from a hailstorm, you should be covered under your car insurance policy’s
