How do you pay for toll roads in New York?

My husband and I are leaving for a road trip from our home in Western Massachusetts to visit our daughter, who just moved to Buffalo, New York. We’re taking my father-in-law along. While a notorious crank, he correctly reminded us we’d have to take the New York Thruway and need to pay tolls. How do you pay for toll roads in New York State?

You can pay for toll roads in New York three ways—with an E-ZPass, by mail via a license plate photo, or with cash at some locations.
Crank or not, your father-in-law is right—you’ll need to pay tolls if using the New York State Thruway or other toll roads while traveling through the Empire State.
Thankfully, doing so is easy, so you’ll be able to keep the comments from the cheap seats to a minimum. Here’s how to pay for toll roads in New York:
  • Buy an E-ZPass: You can buy an E-ZPass On-The-Go Tag at any authorized retailer for $25 in New York State or for $30 in New York City or Long Island. After you buy the tag, register your E-ZPass tag online. Then, the $25 or $30 is credited to your account for toll use. Attach the tag to your windshield, and you’re good to go!
  • Toll by license plate: Where permitted, you can use New York toll roads by paying through the mail. Once you enter the toll road, cameras photograph your license plate and bill you.
  • Cash: Some toll locations allow you to pay with cash before you enter the toll road.
Note that an E-ZPass is the cheaper option. While you’ll have to pay $25 or $30 up front for a tag, this money is added to your account to use on the toll roads. Paying with cash or by mail is more expensive per trip than it would be to use the E-ZPass.
