Gephyrophobia, or the fear of driving over bridges, is a common problem for people. Fortunately, it’s a fear that can be overcome with a little effort and determination.
To overcome a fear of driving over bridges, try out these steps:
- Walk over the bridge. If there’s a pedestrian zone on the bridge, walking across will give you a chance to feel the support of the structure beneath your feet. Hopefully, feeling it for yourself will give you more confidence about its strength.
- Have someone drive you across the bridge. Getting a chance to ride across the bridge without having to focus on traffic should allow you to see just how many people use the structure on a regular basis without issue.
- Drive over it yourself during low-traffic hours. If you can work up to it, driving across the bridge when few other cars are present will give you a chance to get used to the feeling of the structure before you have to drive over it inheavy traffic.
- Consult a mental health expert. A professional can help you work through your fear using methods proven successful by others.
