How do you make a car key without a key?
My husband is overseas and for some reason took our car keys with him. He didn’t realize until he landed. He won’t be back for a month. How do I get a replacement when I don’t have a key for them to copy?

“I’m so sorry to hear all of your keys got to go on an adventure without you! While your situation is frustrating, you have options for a replacement key.
If you have a traditional key, then a locksmith should be able to help. They usually offer mobile services and can help get you on the road again.
If you have a fob with a switchblade key, see if you can contact a dealership to get a new one made for about $125. You may be able to order a replacement online as well.
However, if you have a transponder key or smart key, things are a little more complicated. To get a replacement, you’ll have to get your car towed to the dealership and show proof of ownership. Once verified, a dealership can order you a new key or program one if it’s in stock.
A new transponder key is about $200-$250, while smart keys start around $320.
If you have roadside assistance, this would be a great time to use it as it typically includes lockout service, key replacement, and towing.
