I smell something burning under the hood of my car. I figured I should take a look before I bring it to a mechanic, but I can’t figure out how to open it! What’s the easiest way to lift a car hood?
101. Luckily, it’s pretty easy! To lift your car hood:
Locate the hood release button/lever in your cabin.
Press the button or pull the lever.
Go to the front of your car. The hood should now be a little higher than the grill.
Put your fingers between the hood and the front of your car. Feel around for the safety catch.
Push the safety to the side and lift the hood.
If your hood doesn’t stay open on its own, search the sides of the engine area for a hood prop.
Once you find it, fold it upwards so your hood can rest on the wire.
Congratulations! If you followed those steps, then you just learned how to open a hood. You could try to locate the burning smell yourself once the hood is up, but this type of smell is never a good sign. Having your car checked by a professional as soon as possible is the safest option.
