How do you lift a car hood?
I smell something burning under the hood of my car. I figured I should take a look before I bring it to a mechanic, but I can’t figure out how to open it! What’s the easiest way to lift a car hood?

Learning how to lift your hood is a key piece of
car maintenance
101. Luckily, it’s pretty easy! To lift your car hood:- Locate the hood release button/lever in your cabin.
- Press the button or pull the lever.
- Go to the front of your car. The hood should now be a little higher than the grill.
- Put your fingers between the hood and the front of your car. Feel around for the safety catch.
- Push the safety to the side and lift the hood.
- If your hood doesn’t stay open on its own, search the sides of the engine area for a hood prop.
- Once you find it, fold it upwards so your hood can rest on the wire.
Congratulations! If you followed those steps, then you just learned how to open a hood. You could try to locate the burning smell yourself once the hood is up, but this type of smell is never a good sign. Having your car checked by a professional as soon as possible is the safest option.
