How do you know if your car has a LoJack system?

I bought a used car and my friend told me that it probably has a LoJack system. How can I find out if my car has this?

For over 30 years, the LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery System has enabled law enforcement to find thousands of stolen cars before they’re resold or taken to the chop shop. If you have one on your car, knowing about it is helpful if your car is stolen. Unfortunately, locating the LoJack unit isn’t easy.
Here’s what you should know about the LoJack system.
Each LoJack is installed by a certified technician in one of 20 places on the car. The LoJack essentially functions as a high-tech GPS system, which allows the company—and subsequently law enforcement—to pinpoint the exact location of your vehicle when activated. The tech does not divulge the location of the installed device for safety reasons.
Nevertheless, the LoJack system runs on battery power, so common places it will be installed include:
  • The onboard diagnostic port below the steering column on most vehicles
  • Under the hood near the battery
If you can’t locate the device, another way to possibly find out if your car has one is to use your vehicle identification number (VIN). You can call LoJack at 1-877-563-0032 and ask. Keep in mind that they’re not obligated to give you any information. This policy is simply a safety precaution.
Perhaps the only other way to find out if you have LoJack on your
used car
is to find the original dealer that sold the car. To do this, try these options:
  • Call a dealer that sells the same model vehicle and ask if they can help
  • Request a CARFAX report, as some will list the original dealer
  • Check the original window sticker, if available
  • Ask whoever you bought the car from
One of these methods should provide you with enough information to learn if you have a LoJack system. At that point, call LoJack to ensure the car is registered, then make sure to have your account number somewhere handy in the unfortunate event that your car gets stolen.
