Losing your car title can be nerve-wracking, but don’t worry. You can visit your local DMV office and file an MVR-4 or ask for the application for a
duplicate title
. It will need to be notarized.
You’ll need to take the following with you:
  • Driver’s license
  • Proof of ownership
  • Car VIN
  • Money to pay for the duplicate title
If there’s a
lien-holder
for the vehicle, you’re going to need to contact your financing company holding the lien. As in most cases, the lien-holder will need to apply for the replacement on your behalf.
You should receive your replacement title within 60 days. If you have any questions, make sure to contact your local DMV or check out the North Carolina DMV online at ncdot.gov/dmv.
