You can get a hardship license in

, also called a conditional license, if you can prove that the loss of driving rights will lead to extreme hardship. To be eligible, the following must be true:- Suspension/revocation was due to an alcohol- or drug-related violation in NY
- Driver did not refuse a sobriety test when they were stopped
- There are no other licensed drivers in the household
- Public transportation is not easily accessible
- Driver is unable to afford any alternate forms of transportation
- Driver does not have anyone to assist them with transportation
- Driver has no prior DUI convictions in the last five years
If you satisfy these conditions, you can attend a hardship hearing three days from your arraignment. After getting approval, you are required to attend a DMV-sponsored Impaired Driver Program (IDP) before receiving your hardship license. And in some cases, an ignition interlock device must be installed at your own expense to ensure there are no further violations.
