Wearing your seatbelt is a vital part of keeping yourself safe in your
car
, and it’s the law of the road.
New buckles can be expensive, so you can follow these steps to try to fix it yourself at home before committing to a new purchase.
  • Inspect the seatbelt component. If anything is stuck on the belt, you may be able to clean it off for the buckle to work again.
  • Inspect the buckle itself. Look inside the buckle mechanism to see if anything has gotten stuck inside. Use a butter knife or similar object and slide in the buckle, or try compressed air.
  • Remove the buckle from the seat. Unscrew the buckle from the car seat, or remove it by following the directions in your car’s service manual.
  • Open up the buckle’s socket. Take out all screws in the buckle, and pry the component apart with a screwdriver.
  • Inspect the internal mechanism. Push down on the button to see if the buckle is functioning properly. Remove any blockage if necessary.
  • Find a replacement. If you can’t fix the buckle, you’ll need to replace it. You can find kits to replace your entire seatbelt—and you can save money on labor if you install it yourself.
