A knocking engine rod is a distress signal coming from inside your car. Don’t worry yet—this does not mean your engine is beyond help. If you are familiar with performing
car maintenance
, there are a few things you can do on your own to fix a knocking engine rod.
Before you call a mechanic, follow these steps to stabilize the engine rod:
  • Lift your car on mechanic’s ramps and place an oil pan underneath it
  • Remove the oil cap and drain the oil from your car
  • Put the oil cap back on and change out the oil filter for a new one
  • Fill the engine with 4-5 quarts of fresh oil
  • Check rod bearings and tighten them as needed
  • Clean the fuel-injection system
