How do you dispose of old car batteries?

My sister and I are heading to our mom’s this weekend to help change her car battery. I've never had to do it before. How do I dispose of it?

What good kids you are! Disposing of car batteries isn’t exactly the most obvious thing in the world and they’re hazardous waste!
To safely dispose of a battery:
  • Remove it from the car and wrap it in a plastic bag. Be sure you’re wearing protective equipment and are careful. This will protect you and your car from any potential leaks or dirt on the battery.
  • Look up a local battery recycling center or call an auto parts store. Most retail auto parts stores accept batteries for recycling and you may even receive some money back for recycling it.
Once you find a place that will take the battery, you’re all set! If you’re nervous about the process, don’t hesitate to take it to a
repair shop
. They’ll not only remove and dispose of the battery for you, but they’ll install the new one as well!
