How do you charge an electric car in China?
I’m going to meet some family in Beijing for the first time since COVID-19 hit us all a few years back. I want to rent an electric car to drive myself around in, but am unfamiliar with China’s EV driving experience. How is EV charging in China?

The good news for you is that
China
has over 1 million electric car charging ports, far more than we do in the States. One of the first things you’ll need to do is make sure that you have the proper payment card, which will likely be available through your Chinese rental car
company. As with other countries, inquire with your rental car company as to what charging ports or electric car charging providers your vehicle is compatible with—they may not have universal ports for every model. One of the most essential things? Remember that China is the world’s most populated country, and even though they have over a million car

, there are still stories of people waiting in line for hours to get their EV recharged. This could be a big issue if you wait until your battery is dangerously low in order to head toward the charging station. If you can, and this will be easier for you than most since you won’t be working during the day, try to charge your electric car when other people are at work. This will spare you from the morning and end-of-day rush hour that could leave you powerless and stranded.
