How do you change the oil pan gasket in a 1997 Honda Civic?
I need to change the oil pan gasket on my 1997 Honda Civic. From what I understand, it’s supposed to be pretty easy—so I’d like to try doing it myself. Is there a step-by-step process I can follow to change the oil pan?

Handling minor maintenance yourself is a great way to reduce car care costs! Changing the oil pan gasket will be a good place to start. To change the oil pan gasket for a 1997
Honda Civic
, just follow the instructions below! - Lift/elevate the car so that you can work on it. Make sure it is secure and safe.
- Drain the oil.
- Remove the bolts on top of the exhaust downpipe.
- Remove the nuts on the downpipe.
- Move the downpipe slightly out of the way–be gentle!
- Remove the bolts that hold the tranny to the bracket.
- Remove the nuts holding the flywheel in place.
- Carefully remove the nuts and bolts that hold the oil pan in place.
- Drop the pan.
- Remove the gasket.
- Install the new gasket and apply sealant
- Following the reverse order as before, reinstall, replace, and reattach all the equipment, nuts, and bolts that you removed.
- Refill the oil.
Of course, if all of that sounds like too much hassle, you can always have a mechanic do it. They’ll typically charge you about $400-$500 for the job.
