How do you brace for a car accident?
I often see people getting really injured in even minor car accidents and I’m afraid that could happen to me. If you can see that you’re about to be involved in an accident, how do you brace for impact in a car?

This is a really excellent question! And it’s true—many drivers sustain long-term injuries from minor accidents, so it seems like advice could be useful.
If you can see that you’re about to be involved in an accident, you should:
- Press your head back against the headrest. Neck injuries are common. The headrest was designed to provide support and prevent these injuries, but you could end up hurting yourself if your head is thrown into the headrest upon impact.
- Never lean away from your seat.
- Press your foot firmly against the brake pedal and keep your back snuggly against the seat.
- Tense your body as though you are about to be hit.
If you are involved in an accident, it is important that you call the police immediately and speak to your car insurance company ASAP—whether you decide to make a claim or not.
