Great question! To take someone’s name off of your car title, check the language of the title first. If the title says your name and then AND/OR the other person’s name, then you can title it yourself without the other person’s permission. If the title says AND the other person’s name, you will need their permission to remove their name.
If this is the case, contact your ex-wife and ask for permission to remove her name. Once she agrees, get the title to her either by mail or in person, and have her sign the back of the title over to you. If she refuses to give permission, you may want to contact an attorney that can review your case and give further counsel.
At this point, you can go to your DMV and explain that you need the title put in your nephew’s name. You will need to get a new title with your nephew’s name on it as well as new tags.
