How do I repair my remote control car key?
The buttons don’t work on my car remote anymore. The key is hard to turn in the door, and I am worried it will break. How can I repair the buttons on my remote control car key?

Don’t worry; all key remotes stop working occasionally, usually just due to a dead battery. This is an easy and cheap fix!
Your key fob will need what is called a button battery; this is one of those round, flat single-cell batteries you see in watches. They usually cost around $5.
To replace the battery, follow these steps:
- Grab a flat-tipped screwdriver and work it into the small notch in the middle of the key fob to pop it open.
- Replace the battery.
- Pop the key back in place once the new battery is in, and see if it starts your car.
If your key fob still doesn’t work, the key fob parts themselves may be broken or worn out. Replacement keys and key fobs can be costly, depending on the type you have. If yours is 10 years old or older, you can get an aftermarket fob. You might even get away with just getting a new key recut if you are ok without remote access.
Getting a key from the dealership can run around $400. A good money-saving tip is to check with local auto locksmiths in your area. They are often mobile, and their rates tend to be about 50% of the dealership. They can also check your car door lock; it might just need to be cleaned for your current key to work.
