How do I rent a car to my friend?

My friend wants to rent my car for a trip to see her parents. The trip would be pretty long, and I want to make sure we're doing everything legally and safely. How do I rent my car to her without making a bunch of legal problems for myself if she gets into an accident or something?

It’s nice that you want to help your friend out! Renting a car to a friend can get really complicated, though, and if
your friend crashes your car
, the legal side of the agreement can get a little murky. The best way to rent your car to anyone, friend or stranger, is through a car rental app like Turo.
Car rental apps like this work a lot like Airbnb. You’ll set a price per day, and people like your friend can rent your car for a set amount of time. If you do decide to go this route, check with the app to learn what kind of insurance, if any, they provide, and discuss your coverages with your current provider.
On some insurance policies, you’ll be able to let a friend borrow your car through permissive use. However, keep in mind that:
  • Permissive use coverage is not available on every policy
  • The coverage that you do have might be limited
  • It’s best to check with your insurer before lending your car to a friend
If you’re worried you might not be covered in the event of an accident, use the
Jerry
app to find a new insurance policy that will protect you!
