How do I remove someone from my car title?

My wife and I recently separated (on good terms). She agreed that I can have our truck as part of the settlement. However, her name is still on the title, and as I've never been divorced before, I'm not sure how to take it off. How do I remove her name?

“I’m sorry about the divorce but glad that you’re on good terms, especially since that can make the division of assets much easier. To remove your wife from your
car title
, you can follow a similar process to transferring the title when selling your car.
On the back of the title, you’ll fill out the form as the buyer and your wife as the seller. You may have to do this in front of a notary in some states. In other states, though, a divorce decree might be enough to waive her signature.
You’ll need to go to your state’s DMV and show them the new title, your divorce decree (just in case), and fill out new paperwork to have the title and registration in your name only.
As you’re getting a divorce, you may also need to rethink your car insurance. If you were on a policy with your ex-wife, you will need to get your own policy. This might affect your rates, so be sure to compare quotes with multiple companies. An easy way to do this is with the
Jerry
app—we’ll get you personalized quotes from top-of-the-line providers so that all you have to do is choose the plan that’s best for you.
Best of luck with the divorce, the car, and everything in between.”
