How do I remove a steering column in a 1998 Buick LeSabre?
I’m a pretty advanced DIYer, but this one has me stumped. I’m trying to remove a steering column in a 1998 Buick LeSabre, but I’ve never attempted this before. What are the steps?

First off, we’re glad to hear you enjoy DIY car projects! And no worries, you’re far from the first person to run into this problem with those panels.
Before we begin here, a quick disclaimer: removing a steering column isn’t an easy DIY project. You’ll want to invest in a repair manual before attempting this repair on your
Buick LeSabre
, even if you’re an advanced car repair DIYer.Here are the broad steps, assuming you’re also following a manual:
- Disconnect the car battery
- Remove the four screws—two on each side— holding the lower panels in place
- The tilt lever is going to also be in the way, but that should pop out
- Disconnect the horn
- Remove the airbag (this requires a special tool, though some manuals will suggest using two screwdrivers)
- Remove the steering wheel nut and then the steering wheel, but be sure to use a marker or tape to note the wheel’s position on the steering shaft
- Remove the upper covers, which at this point should already be loose
- Carefully disconnect the electric harness and all of its connectors to the column
- Remove the body control module and the bracket it uses, disconnecting the yellow wire harness as you go
- Unscrew the steering shaft nut that connects the upper and intermediate shafts, and mark their positions
- Remove the upper and lower mounting nuts, then pull the shaft away from the intermediate shaft
Like we mentioned earlier, this is a very complicated procedure, and it’s best left to professionals if you aren’t confident you can get everything back together again. But a highly experienced DIYer can definitely remove a steering column on their own if they have a repair manual for reference.
