Good for you! To change the timing belt on a
Suzuki
Vitara, you’ll need a new belt, gaskets, gasket adhesive, a wrench, and several hours.
First, make sure you have a new belt that is appropriate to your Vitara. Check the specs in your owner’s manual carefully before purchasing.
Here are the basic steps:
  • Disconnect the battery safely (remember to save your radio presets!)
  • Remove any accessories that are in the way of the timing belt (steering pump)
  • Find TDC (Top Dead Center) on the first cylinder and line up timing marks
  • Line up the timing marks to zero by rotating the engine
  • Remove the timing belt cover
  • Loosen the tensioner and slide old belt off
  • Replace new belt and reassemble
If you want a timing belt kit, you can expect to pay around $150. For just the belt, you’ll pay less than $50.
Note that most experts recommend that you change the water pump at the same time.
